Evolove storms Denver!

Posted by

Sweet is not the typical word I use for lead singers, but Lucy is the perfect mix of PR and Badass. At first glance the polka dotted dress and red satin gloves made me think rockabilly, but her pipes are a hard rock scintillation of Amy Lee meets Pink. Musically Evolove’s hard hitting sound brought the crowd to their feet. Evolove is right out of the heart of Los Angeles competing for stage time with thousands of other projects. They are on tour for another 2 weeks touring east and back. The Rockstar Lounge hosted Evolove on August 14th along side Roniit, the melodic Metro State sensation and some band with an angry vagina with teeth as their back drop, don’t ask me I tuned out when the hating began. Their tour is sharing the road with another incredible band I had the pleasure of photographing, Stitched up Heart.
Evolove is making it happen, booking their own dates and making the necessary money to propel themselves one state further. The hardcore mentality of the touring band is one that separates those that are going somewhere verses someone who is playing in their mom’s basement. While the Rockstar was a cool venue and the lighting is divine for pictures, it struggles finding the right sound, something venues like the Gothic know all too well. Needless to say sound clarity and quality were not in the cards that night for Evolove. Having an understanding of the art I could hear the band as they should sound and was genuinely impressed by the range of Lucy’s voice and the intricacies of the guitars and rhythm of the drums. Check them out in two weeks in Durango, CO if you happen to spend your last days of Summer Higher than 5280.

  • This is a great article on an upcoming act out of Los Angeles, Evolove. Lucy and the crew were a treat to hang out with and it was a pleasure to share the stage with them. The best part is seeing local press, like yourself, giving them coverage.

However, my primary intent with this comment is to address a specific line of your article. Regardless of your personal tastes in music, I am suprised to see a self-professed humanitarian so quick to discount the “some band with an angry vagina with teeth” due to “hate”. Aggressive music does not equal hate. If you had not tuned out, perhaps you would have heard the talk between songs ( as many of the songs are hard to understand because of the metal vocals) of being called to arms, to stand up and protest against the status quo. This included things such as the current status of rape law and domestic violence. In fact, the band mentioned the upcoming Jam 4 Japan event that they were playing to raise funds for the Red Cross Japan Relief Fund.Surely, if there was any hating done that night, it was against rapists and authoritarian regimes.

The Dead Lotus Society is not about mulling around in hatred within one’s basement. Rather, the band focuses on finding enlightenment through embracing the trials and tribulations in our lives. Said enlightenment cannot follow without understanding the dark side of life and consumming it to spit out a new philosophical beast. More importantly, the Dead Lotus is reaching out to those that are sick of the saccharine sounds of most bands and need brutal noise to connect. Many of these frustrated individuals (not necessarily hateful) will not even glance at a CD marketed as being overly bright and hopeful. To them, it is a facade of the reality at hand and their hope must come from other genres. The media is quick to discount them, but not the Dead Lotus Society. If you are on a mission to help, you cannot alienate entire sections of society, especially those yearning for a catharsis the most.

I welcome any debate on the topic and I’m happy to answer your questions. I hope I was able to clarify things for you and your readers. In the future, I hope you are not so quick to immediately discount music that appears “hateful” to you as there are many other amazing acts that might fall into that category.

Thank you for your time and support of the Denver music scene.

    P.S.
The vagina dentata backdrop is in fact a visual representation of empowering an integral physical component of the female sex. It is so often an object of disgust or desire that it was a necessary act to give it strength and ferocity. In music and life, it is a representation that females are a force to be contended with and not placed on a pedestal.

    Sincerely,
    Hyatt Llorona
    Dead Lotus Society Front Woman
